What is Mileage Club at Alta Vista?

Mileage Club is a non-competitive lunch recess outdoor running/walking activity for kids from 1st grade to 5th grade. It is an excellent way to encourage children to:

  • remain active during lunch recess
  • set and strive to achieve goals
  • build confidence

What are the key highlights of Mileage Club?

  • Program starts September 11th and 6 parent volunteers are needed. Mileage Club will be held at the school field on Mondays and Fridays during lunch break throughout the year (weather permitting).
  • Kids walk/run around the school field (half of the field, coming down the center of the field following the cones to get their card punched).
  • Each time they complete a lap, their card will be punched.  A completed card has 20 punches and equals approximately 3 miles.
  • Once the child has completed a card they will be awarded a token to be used as a bracelet, zipper pull on their lunch pack or backpack. They will also be invited to join us for Mileage Club celebrations throughout the year. We typically have one in the fall and one in the Spring. ALL participants (regardless of number of laps completed) will receive a Mileage Club certificate

Volunteers Needed!

Sadly, we had to cancel a few Mileage Club days last year due to lack of volunteers. We are really hoping to get more support for this program this year!

Volunteer requirements and Info:

  • You can sign up for as many or as few days as you like! There is no monthly or weekly commitment so it works around your schedule!
  • Volunteer time is from 12:10-12:55 pm on Mondays and Fridays. Volunteers arrive at 12:00 to setup (put up banners, set up cones, line up punch card boxes ready). Kids get their punch cards and begin running and walking at 12:10. By 12:40, mileage club is completed and volunteers pack up and go home!
  • Volunteer roles:
    • Punchers: (punch cards as students complete laps and cheer them on!
    • New card/Bracelet charm duty: Help students get a bracelet and/or charm and fill out a new card for them.
    • Spotter: 1-2 spotters at corners to make sure students are staying on the path.
